A Lakeside High School student was named Columbia County's STAR student during a ceremony Thursday in Harlem.
Matthew Lawrence Moseley, 17, won the top honor out of six Columbia County high school seniors. Matthew had chosen Lakeside High band director Robert Jarrell as his STAR teacher.
"He's been a really great teacher," Matthew said of Mr. Jarrell. "I don't think he gets nearly the recognition he deserves to get."
The STAR -- Student Teacher Achievement Recognition -- program was created 41 years ago to focus public attention on Georgia's outstanding students and the teachers who have been instrumental in the students' academic development. The program is sponsored statewide by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and locally by the Harlem Woman's Club.
Matthew and Mr. Jarrell will now compete at the district level with 13 other area counties. Locally, the STAR student is chosen by the highest score on the Scholastic Assessment Test.
Matthew is the son of Norman and Ginger Moseley of Martinez and has been in Lakeside High's band for four years. He is active in the school's show choir and the National Honor Society.
