Nostalgia carries NBC to opening `sweeps' win

NEW YORK -- NBC's return to the 1960s for a miniseries and to the 1980s for a mini Cheers reunion helped the network to a comfortable ratings victory during the first week of the important February "sweeps" period.

Part one of NBC's music-packed miniseries, The '60's, was a hit on Sunday despite a tepid critical reaction. Its audience of 24 million viewers was bigger than any other program outside of NBC's Thursday-night schedule, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday.

Frasier, the week's second-most-watched show, drew higher ratings than normal Thursday night with actor Woody Harrelson reprising his Cheers role.

ER was the week's most popular show, as is customary, in its countdown to George Clooney's departure.

In what's becoming a tradition in one of the four "sweeps" months when ratings are watched closely to set local advertising rates, Fox drew solid numbers with dramatic nonfiction programming. Last Thursday's duo of specials included World's Most Shocking Moments and a daredevil jump by Robbie Knievel.

For the week, NBC had a 10.3 rating and 17 share. CBS was a solid second with a 9.3 rating and 15 share. ABC had a 7.9 rating and 13 share, and Fox was at 7.2 and 11.

Among the developing networks, the WB had a 3.3 rating and 5 share, and UPN had a 2.1 rating and 3 share.

Prime-time ratings compiled by Nielsen Media Research for Feb. 1-7. Top 20 listings include the week's ranking, with rating for the week and season-to-date rankings in parentheses.

An "X" in parentheses denotes a one-time-only presentation. The rating is the percentage of the nation's estimated 99.4 million TV homes. Each ratings point represents 994,000 households.
