Monday, Feb. 15 is George Washington's Birthday. This is a federal holiday. Federal employees get the day off, but Richmond County School Board officials don't think Washington's birthday is important enough to close schools for the day.
To add insult to injury, Feb. 19 is a teacher's workshop day, meaning there's no school. My family can't take advantage of the three-day weekend because the children have to go to school, but later in the same week, I either have to take a day off work or pay a babysitter to watch my children.
Is it too much to ask that the Richmond County Board of Education look at a regular calendar when making up the school year calendar?
