Less than super Super Bowl still a winner for Fox

NEW YORK -- The Denver Broncos' victory over Atlanta may not have matched previous Super Bowl contests in excitement or TV ratings, but it was good enough for Fox.

A total of 127.5 million people watched at least one minute of the game, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday. As expected, the huge audience enabled Fox to easily capture the week's ratings crown.

The average audience for the full game was 83.7 million -- making it the second-lowest-rated Super Bowl game since 1971 and topping only the 1990 game between San Francisco and Denver.

The number most important to Fox: the more than $150 million in advertising revenue earned during the game and its pre-game and post-game shows. The network said it was the largest single day of revenue in TV history.

Fox also persuaded an estimated 22 million viewers to stay around after the game to watch a preview of its new animated series, Family Guy. The series begins airing regularly in March.

For the week, Fox had a 13.2 rating and 21 audience share. CBS was second with an 8.0 rating and 13 share; NBC had a 7.5 rating and 12 share; and ABC was fourth with a 6.8 and 11. The WB had a 3.2 rating and 5 share among the developing networks. UPN had a 2.1 and 3, and Pax TV had a 0.8 and 1.

Here are prime-time ratings compiled by Nielsen Media Research for Jan. 25-31. Top 20 listings include the week's ranking, with rating for the week and season-to-date rankings in parentheses.

An "X" in parentheses denotes a one-time-only presentation. The rating is the percentage of the nation's estimated 99.4 million TV homes. Each ratings point represents 994,000 households.
