NEW YORK -- Providence was the word at NBC, as Providence premiered with heavenly ratings and the network won the week overall.
NBC may have a much-needed hit on its hands with this replacement for its instant Friday failure Trinity. On the opener, Providence scored eighth place with a 13.1 household rating. It was the best premiere showing by an NBC drama since ER in September 1994, the network said.
Another new show, Fox's Eddie Murphy-created The PJs, took 13th place with a 12.6 rating in its Sunday preview airing, to become Sunday's most-watched show on any network. This week the animated comedy settles in its regular Tuesday slot.
In prime time for the week of Jan. 4-10, NBC logged a winning 9.8 rating and 15 share, according to Nielsen Media Research figures released Tuesday. CBS edged out ABC for second place, with a 9.5 rating and 15 share. ABC had a 9.4 rating and 15 share. Fox (programming 15 hours) had a 7.7 rating and 12 share.
