No. 1 Barnwell is one step away from returning to the Class AA championship game. The Warhorses fell 21-19 to Pageland-Central in the 1997 title game. ... The No. 9 Panthers have won two consecutive road games to get to the Lower State championship game. ... Warhorse RBAndre Smith broke the 1,000-yard barrier last week when he picked up 171 yards in Barnwell's 31-7 victory at Swansea. The senior has 1,109 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. ... Barnwell QB Marcus Robinson has thrown for 1,040 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. ... Panther coach Phil Strickland is 2-0 against Barnwell during his seven-year tenure including a 35-0 victory in the 1995 state championship game.

No. 3 Calhoun Falls is the highest-ranked Class A team still alive in the playoffs. The Blue Flashes have had a tremendous turnaround this year. They finished 3-7 in the 1997 regular season and have advanced to the Upper State championship game.

Lamar upset defending state champ Lake View in the second round of the Class A playoffs. The Silver Foxes then sent Timmonsville home with a 14-12 victory last week. This Lower State championship game features No. 6 Johnsonville and No. 9 Lamar.

Fairfield-Central at Daniel, 8 p.m.

In a rematch of last year's Class AAA state championship game, No.2 Fairfield-Central takes on No. 5 Daniel in the Upper State championship game. This game features one of the state's top players, Daniel OL Kevin Breedlove, who has been recruited by colleges from across the nation. ... Griffin RB T.J. Cantey has rushed for more than 1,100 yards this season.

Manning at Newberry, 8 p.m.

Game notes: No. 3 Manning faces No. 8 Newberry for the Lower State championship. Manning is looking to return to the Class AAA championship game for the first time since 1994. Newberry assistant coach Zach Norris will coach his boys basketball team in the 100 Black Men tournament at Augusta State today at 1:30 p.m., then return home for the football game.

Marlboro Co. at Greenwood, 8 p.m.

Walterboro at Ridge View, 8 p.m.
