NEW YORK -- CBS pulled even with NBC in the final days of television's critical November "sweeps" period, thanks in large part to Dr. Jack Kevorkian.
Sunday's controversial 60 Minutes episode, in which Dr. Kevorkian supplied film of himself giving a lethal dose of drugs to a terminally ill patient, was the top-rated CBS show of the week and had its best ratings of the season.
CBS scored a decisive victory in the week's prime-time Nielsen Media Research competition with a 9.7 rating and 16 share. NBC was second with a 9.2 rating and 15 share; ABC had a 9.1 and 15; and Fox was at 7.6 and 12.
Through Monday night, CBS and NBC were in a dead heat for best ratings during the Novembers "sweeps," when the numbers are used to set local advertising rates. The sweeps competition continues through Wednesday night.
Although each network tried to look at the bright side on Tuesday, the WB is the only network with higher November ratings than it had last year. Fox is flat, and NBC, CBS, ABC and UPN are all down significantly.
A rating point represents 994,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 99.4 million TV homes. Share is the percentage of televisions that are in use and tuned to a given program.
