TOKYO -- Top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario ousted Elena Likhovtseva of Russia 6-0, 6-4 Thursday and advanced to the Toyota Princess Cup quarterfinals.
Sanchez-Vicario's next opponent will be another Russian, fifth-seeded Kournikova, who beat Taiwan's Wang Shi-tung 6-0, 6-4.
Thursday's play included an upset when Olga Barabanschikova of Belarus beat fourth seed Dominique Van Roost of Belgium 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Barabanschikova next will face seventh-seeded Anke Huber of Germany, who eliminated Li Fang of Taiwan 7-5, 6-3.
Monica Seles advanced to the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Sanchez-Vicario, fresh from leading Spain to victory over Switzerland in the Fed Cup final last week, was pleased with the way she played after having only one day to prepare for the Toyota Princess Cup.
"I am happy to win the first match after a long flight from Europe and not having so much time to recover," she said. "The first match is the hardest because I have a bye and the other player has already played one match."
Likhovtseva has now lost four of five lifetime meetings against the Spaniard.
