A satellite with wings

News media view the High Altitude Long Operation-Proteus aircraft prior to its inaugural flight Tuesday Sept. 22, 1998, near Mojave, Calif.

The aircraft, that functions like a communications relay satellite, is designed to circle metropolitan areas for hours, some 50,000 feet high, providing 1,000 times the capacity per square mile of a conventional satellite.
