Good Samaritan Baptist Church will hold Helen Lawrence/Carl Sanders Day during its annual Men's Day fund-raiser. The former governor will speak during the 11:30 a.m. service.Mr. Sanders, who was baptized at The Hill Baptist Church, served as a deacon and taught Sunday school there.
He won a seat in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1954 and was elected governor in 1963, the same year President Kennedy was assassinated. He served as governor from 1964 until 1967.
Mrs. Lawrence, whose father was a deacon at Good Samaritan, has continued her membership there. The Sanders family hired her when she was 21 years old to care for his parents about the start of Mr. Sanders's political career, 45 years ago, said Dr. Robert Turner, pastor.
Mrs. Lawrence cared for the Sanders children and continues to assist the family now that the children are grown. Although she lives in Atlanta, she still thinks of Good Samaritan as her home church, he said. Many of her relatives still attend there and she does herself when she is in Augusta.
