CHARLESTON, S.C. -- South Carolina State used a relentless ground attack to wear down the Charleston Southern Buccaneers defense in a 17-7 season opening win.
Derek O'Neal rushed for 75 yards as the Bulldogs piled up 239 total rushing yards and scored 17 unanswered points.
Charleston Southern got on the board first as quarterback Brooks Combs connected with Ande Goldsmith on an 80-yard touchdown pass on his first attempt of the season late in the first quarter.
The Buccaneers defense held the Bulldogs scoreless into the second quarter until Chad Eaddy scored a touchdown from one yard out, completing a 10-play, 39-yard drive. The Bulldogs rushed the ball in nine of those 10 plays.
The 7-7 tie lasted until late in the third quarter when Cedrick Oglesby kicked a 28-yard field goal to put the Bulldogs up for good. O'Neal added the final touchdown in the fourth quarter.
