Shortly before Georgia's runoff election, I received a postcard from the Heritage Preservation Association headquartered in Cobb County and run by a Lee Collins. It informed me that Demo-cratic lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Mark Taylor supported our current state flag, and that his Democratic primary opponent Mary Margaret Oliver supported past efforts to censor Southern heritage because of the Georgia flag.
If that is not the pot calling the kettle black!
State senator Taylor, D-Albany -- who happened to be the governor's floor leader -- led the fight (in 1993) to remove the Army of Southern Independence standard from the state flag. This was brought out here in Augusta during the Aug. 22 Council of Conservative Citizens meeting by the group's president, Tom Dover.
Mr. Dover's organization has led the fight to unseat Gov. David Beasley in South Carolina because of the governor's past opposition to the standard.
(This organization) is surely not going to let Mr. Taylor wrap himself in the Georgia flag after his hypocrisy. Southern politicians had better heed the warning: "No one touches me with impunity," which is the motto Southerners take toward the flag.
