BARNWELL, S.C. - Barnwell looks like its ready to make another run at the Class AA state championship.
Tailback Andre Smith and quarterback Marcus Robinson combined for 262 yards of total offense and five touchdowns as Barnwell romped past Williston-Elko 48-0 in the season opener for both squads at Barnwell High School on Friday night.
Barnwell went 14-1 and advanced to the Class AA state championship game last season with Smith and Robinson leading the way. The duo picked up where they left off last season.
Smith rushed nine times for 98 yards and scored three touchdowns in less than three quarters, while Robinson was 8-for-11 for 87 yards and two touchdowns and rushed five times for 77 yards.
Barnwell had 333 yards of total offense, including 246 yards rushing, in the first three quarters in building a 41-0 lead. The Warhorses finished with more than 400 yards of total offense, including 320 yards rushing.
Smith and Robinson combined for 214 of 222 yards of total offense as Barnwell took a 21-0 lead into intermission.
"I want to help this team get to the state championship game anyway I can," Smith said. "We want to make up for getting cheated last year."
Smith rushed six times for 75 yards and two touchdowns, both from 14 yards out, and Robinson added a two-point conversion run as the Warhorses took a 14-0 lead after one period.
Robinson, who got all of his rushing yardage and completed six of eight passes for 62 yards in the opening half, threw his first touchdown pass of the season a 28-yarder to tight end Avesta Conner as Barnwell built its lead to 21-0 with 4:33 remaining in the opening half.
The Warhorses held the Blue Devils of Williston-Elko to 71 yards of total offense in the second half.
Barnwell fumbled five times and lost two, but Williston-Elko was not able to capitalize in the opening half. The Blue Devils' deepest penetration came when it recovered a fumble on a punt return at the Warhorses' 27 yard line. Adam Rooks recovered the fumble for the Blue Devils, but they were not able to convert the turnover into points.
Barnwell scored 20 points in the first 3:54 of the second half to stretch its lead to 41-0.
Reserve tailback Lamont Holloway scored on a 51-yard touchdown run; Smith scored his third touchdown on a seven-yard run; and Robinson connected with tight end Avesta Conner for the second time on the night from 10 yards out.
Williston-Elko had two turnovers, both fumbles, during Barnwell's third-quarter scoring surge.
