Singer killed in celebratory gunfire at wedding

CAIRO, Egypt -- A man firing an automatic rifle in celebration of his brother's marriage accidentally shot and killed a singer performing at the wedding, Egyptian police said Monday.

Police said 22-year-old Ayman Abdel-Wahab died Saturday at the wedding in Mir, in southern Egypt. The groom's brother, Gamal Abdel-Gawad, was taken into custody, police said.

Firing weapons at weddings is still common in southern Egypt, despite a government ban on the practice.

Last week, a bride and groom were shot dead at their wedding when a guest misjudged his aim while trying to fire over their heads. The bride's mother is hospitalized, recovering from a gunshot wound.
