Furniss-led Jackets top Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Eddie Furniss slammed three hits, including a two-run homer in the eighth, drove in three runs and scored twice to lead the Augusta GreenJackets to a 9-2 victory over the Asheville Tourists on Saturday.

The victory was the Jackets' second straight over the Tourists.

Brad Guy collected his fourth victory against two losses, coming into the game in the fifth. Augusta starter Clint Johnston yielded only two hits, but gave up the two Asheville runs. Wilson Guzman pitched shutout ball in the last two innings as the trio combined to hold Asheville to just four hits.

Meanwhile, Jackets batters pounded a quartet of Tourists pitchers for 15 hits, including Furniss' ninth home run and homers Nos. 5 for Kory DeHaan and Alex Pena.

The GreenJackets went ahead to stay in the third inning when they trailed 2-1 on the strength of DeHaan's solo home run in the first inning.

DeHaan reached base on an error and Furniss singled him to second. Lankford doubled both home.

Augusta scored three times in the fourth, one coming on a sacrifice fly by Furniss, another on an Asheville error and the last on a Lankford single.

Pena homered in the fifth and Furniss struck his two-run blow in the eighth.

The teams continue their four-game series with a 2 p.m., game today and wind it up on Monday.
