SEA ISLAND, Ga. -- Augustan Jeff Knox made a big move Friday in the second round of the Georgia State Golf Association Amateur Championship.
Knox, winner of the Azalea Invitational in Charleston, S.C., earlier this season, matched the day's low score on Friday with a 5-under-par 67 at Sea Island's Ocean Forest course to move within one shot of the lead.
For the second straight day, Harold Wyatt of Atlanta is the lead. Wyatt, a 30-year-old real estate broker, has turned in rounds of 70-71 -- 141.
Knox opened with a 75 but had six birdies and one bogey en route to the 67 on Friday.
Another Augustan, Vaughn Taylor, is solo third. Taylor, the former Augusta State golfer who played in last month's U.S. Open, has fired rounds of 71-72 -- 143.
Five golfers are tied for fourth place at 145, headed by Augustan Scott Volpitto, who has shot 71-74. The others are 145 are Wes Latimer of Woodstock, who had a 71 on Friday; Bob McDonnell of Suwanee, 69; Columbus' Bill Ploeger, 73; and Pine Mountain's Bill Roberts, 74.
The 36-hole cut was made at 156, leaving a field of 70 players.
