SEA ISLAND, Ga. -- Two Augustans are one shot off the lead in the first round of the thunderstorm-delayed Georgia State Golf Association Amateur Championship.
Former Augusta State golfer Vaughn Taylor and former Westside star Scott Volpitto, a rising sophomore at Texas Christian, both shot 1-under-par 71s at the Ocean Forest course at Sea Island.
Taylor and Volpitto trail leader Harold Wyatt of Atlanta.
Also at 71 at Bill Leonard of Marietta and Bill Roberts of Pine Mountain.
The round was suspended by darkness with six players still on the course, caused by an earlier thunderstorm that caused a delay of 1 hour, 44 minutes.
Wyatt, 30, arrived for his 9:21 a.m. starting time with just 21 seconds to spare, narrowly avoiding a two-stroke penalty that would have been assessed had he been late. He made birdies on Nos. 3, 7 and 16 to offset his only bogey of the day at the 12th hole and his early score stood up through the day.
After today's second round, the field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties and anyone within 10 shots of the lead.
