Senior calendar

The Senior Calendar is a listing of activities and groups of interest to senior citizens. Please call the service agencies for information. Out and about

DANCES: Second Saturdays; American Legion Post 63, free two-step lessons 7:30 p.m.; ballroom, Latin and nightclub music, 8-11 p.m., $10 per person; beginners welcome; casual dress; 854-8888.

Senior classes

OPERATION INDEPENDENCE: Program to help disabled older adults obtain access to services and support; 667-4695 or (888) 922-4464.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Long-term Care Ombudsman Program helps residents who live in long-term-care facilities; 826-4480.

MEALS-ON-WHEELS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 10:30-11:30 a.m. weekdays to deliver meals to elderly; 826-4480.

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT: Free AARP Foundation Senior Community Service Employment Program for certified nursing assistant course; eligibility limited to Georgia residents 55 or older who meet federal low income guidelines and who are able to pass a pre-entry screen; 722-4700.

Senior health

CSRA AGENCY ON AGING: Aging Connection offers information and referral assistance to help seniors with home-delivered meals, transportation, homebound counseling, legal services, homemaker aides and housing; 667-4695 or (888) 922-4464.

Grief support

Senior Friends

CLASSES, ACTIVITIES: Classes and activities are offered by Senior Friends of Columbia Augusta Medical Center. Activities include chair exercise, tai chi lessons, bridge, pinochle, canasta and health and educational programs. Most activities held at Augusta Professional Building, 3624 J. Dewey Gray Circle. Membership is open to anyone 50 or older for $15 a year. Reservations required; 651-6716.

CHAIR CLASS EXERCISE: 8:30-9 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, members only.

INTERMEDIATE LINE DANCE LESSONS: 7 p.m. today; four-week course of line dancing lessons; $6, registration required.

Resource Center on Aging

CENTER: The Resource Center on Aging is sponsored by University Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital. Most activities are held at Augusta Mall, University Hospital and the center office in Daniel Village on Wrightsboro Road. Activities include bridge, bingo, pinochle, crafts, health and informational seminars, movies, exercise classes and trips. PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP: 7 p.m. third Thursdays, Daniel Village.

ATLANTA BRAVES BASEBALL TRIP: 3:30-12:30 p.m. Friday, June 12; tickets includes motor coach and a Braves tickets with seats on first level outfield pavilion at Turner Field; $45.

Senior Center

ACTIVITIES: Leisure activities, classes and seminars and exercise sessions are offered weekdays at the Senior Center, 535 15th St.; 826-4480.

HEALTH INSURANCE COUNSELING: Volunteer counselor available daily to answer questions and help individuals to understand Medicare, private insurance and supplemental insurance; call for appointment.

PICTURE ID CARDS: 10:30 a.m. to noon first Mondays.

TRIP TO EASTERN EUROPE: Depart July 15; $1,976 per person from New York or $2,225 from Augusta; 826-4480.

Shiloh Center

ACTIVITIES: Activities are offered weekdays for senior citizens at Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center, 1635 15th St. Activities include bridge, spades, pinochle, fitness and quilting; 738-0089.

St. John Towers

ACTIVITIES: Activities are offered at St. John Towers Retirement Residence, 724 Greene St. For more information, call 722-2096.
