Beech Island resident James Brown was the first artist nominated this year for the Greater Augusta Arts Council's annual Arts Recognition Awards.
"That doesn't mean he'll get it," said Arts Council Executive Director Brenda Durant.
But Mrs. Durant is hoping the Godfather of Soul will attend the Arts Council's annual dinner at the Radisson Riverfront Hotel on June 16, when the awards will be presented.
The awards, which recognize outstanding contributions to the Augusta-area arts community, are given in five categories: individual artist, corporate, volunteer, media (individual or corporate) and arts professional.
The arts council is now accepting nominations for the Annual Arts Recognition awards. The deadline for nominations is May 29.
"It's an honor to be nominated," said Mrs. Durant. "It means you are appreciated by your peer group."
Last year was the first year for the arts-professional category. It is designed to recognize individuals who have made contributions to the arts community as professionals but not as professional artists. Former Augusta Symphony Executive Director Pat Finch was awarded the inaugural award in 1997.
"This is how we say we noticed -- we appreciate you," said Mrs. Durant.
Nomination forms can be picked up at the Arts Council's office at Sacred Heart Cultural Center or requested by mail or fax. Write the Greater Augusta Arts Council at P.O. Box 1776, Augusta, GA 30903, or send a fax to 826-4723.
