I read the May 1 letter from Jim Oates referring to Southern people and this "mentality" about guns. He does not think there will be any reference to "Northern mentality." Since the shooting in Pennsylvania by a 14-year-old boy, I'm assuming he read somewhere that it was a "Southern thing" (guns, kids shooting and the like).
I am from Pennsylvania and we have distributed people everywhere. I feel bad for anyone who has had to deal with any type of tragedy -- be it shooting or anything else. It does not matter if they are Southern or Northern. Violence is violence, the end is always the same pain and sorrow, confusion and death.
If people would think more about the effect of their actions and the actions of others, the world would be a better place.
I wonder if Mr. Oates' first thought was "What a tragedy -- how could it have been prevented?" ... I'm almost certain it was. But when did his concern for how the South was portrayed in the media kick in (in order to write the letter)?
Let me assure you, guns kill everywhere.
I do not care who comes up with a way to stop the killings -- Southerners or Northerners. Please let it stop.
