Local events put different spins on Mayfest activities

Mayfest means different things to different people.

To members of the Augusta German Friendship Club, Mayfest marks the beginning of spring, with traditional German music, dancing and cuisine.

To fans of smoothed-out R&B, hip-hop and gospel, Mayfest 98 symbolizes free performances of live music by national recording artists and an all-day party at May Park.

Both Mayfests, which are Augusta traditions, are on Saturday this year.

The German-flavored event will be from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday at Julian Smith Casino, 2200 Broad St. at Milledge Road.

In past years, the urban music festival has packed May Park at 622 Fourth St., in the shadows of the Richmond County Law Enforcement Center. Organizers claim the event, which they say drew 30,000 spectators last year, is the biggest concert in Augusta.

This year's performers include Atlanta quartet Xscape, rapper Yo Yo, R&B trio Playa, crooner Myron and foursome Elusion.

Xscape has a Top Five single on Billboard's R&B singles chart with The Arms of the One Who Loves You. The song is also No. 8 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart.

Local band Sequence Eight and gospel musicians will also perform.Music begins at noon.

Besides music, the May Park festival is defined by food. Spectators are encouraged to set up barbecue grills and have picnics.

The Mayfest concert is sponsored by radio station WFXA-FM (103.1), WJBF-TV (Channel 6), WTHB-AM (1550), Coca-Cola and the Augusta-Richmond County Recreation and Parks Department.
