Man tries ATM heist with tool

AIKEN -- Aiken County Sheriff's Office is looking for a man who took a hammer to an automated teller machine near Hitchcock Parkway.

On Saturday, a man broke into the ATM owned by the SRP Federal Credit Union at the corner of South Carolina Highway 118 and U.S. Highway 1 but couldn't get to the cash, so he grabbed some ATM cards instead, said Lt. Michael Frank, sheriff's spokesman.

The cards were ones the machine seized for one reason or another, he said.

"He's created a lot of trouble for himself," Lt. Frank said.

The whole incident lasted a couple of minutes.

Police describe the man as black, 17 to 25 years old with black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with any information is asked to call the sheriff's office at (803) 642-1761 or (800) 922-3211 or call Crime Stoppers at (803) 642-1798.

Individuals who provide information leading to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward.
