El Nino East, better known as heavy rains, prevented the start of the Region 3-AAA baseball playoffs Wednesday.
The teams will try again today as defending Class AAA state champion Greenbrier (14-3) will be at Richmond Academy at 4:30 p.m. in Game 1 of their best-of-three semifinal series, while Swainsboro (17-5) will travel to Westside (17-6) at 5 p.m. in Game 1 of their best-of-three series.
Games 2 and 3, if necessary, in the Richmond Academy-Greenbrier series will be played Friday at 4 p.m. at Greenbrier.
Games 2 and 3, if necessary, in the Swainsboro-Westside series will be at 1 p.m. at Swainsboro on Saturday. Winners will advance to the Region 3-AAA championship game and the Class AAA state playoffs next week.
Last year, Greenbrier defeated Columbus Hardaway for the Class AAA state title. Westside advanced to the Class AAA state semifinals last season before falling to Hardaway and preventing an All-Region 3-AAA state championship series.
In the Class AAA state polls, Hardaway is No. 1, while Greenbrier is No. 2. Westside and Swainsboro are ranked No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.
In girls' soccer, Westside (9-2) will meet Greenbrier (12-2) for the Region 3-AAA title tonight at 7:30 at Lumpkin Road Stadium. Both teams will advance to next week's Class AAA state playoffs, but the winner will play host to a first- round playoff game as the Region 3-AAA champion on Wednesday. The loser will play on the road as the No. 2 seed.
Westside clinched its Class AAA playoff berth with a 5-0 win against Richmond Academy on Tuesday, thanks to four goals from senior star Katie Lawrence. Greenbrier defeated Dublin to earn its playoff spot.
