LAS VEGAS -- Oscar De La Hoya and Julio Cesar Chavez will fight on Sept. 18 in a rematch of the bout that helped catapult De La Hoya to stardom.
The fight is contingent on both boxers winning fights before the scheduled rematch. De La Hoya defends his WBC welterweight title June 13 against Patrick Charpentier of France in El Paso, Texas, while Chavez will fight an undetermined opponent June 25.
Promoter Bob Arum is expected to announce the rematch at a Thursday press conference.
De La Hoya stopped a bleeding Chavez in the fourth round of their June 7, 1996, fight for the WBC junior welterweight title held by Chavez.
The rematch will be sponsored by Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
