Area sports events



Announcements for participatory events must be written, delivered, mailed or faxed to The Augusta Chronicle, P.O. Box 1928, Augusta, Ga. 30903-1928, with a return address and phone number. No phone calls will be accepted. Fax number: (706) 823-3408.

The announcements will be published each Sunday, and must be in the office by the Thursday prior to publication.

Baseball

-- Robert Sapp Baseball Camps will be held this summer at Foley Field, University of Georgia. Various skill levels covered. -- April 24: The CSRA Sports Fan Club will sponsor a bus trip to the Atlanta Braves-Arizona Diamondbacks game in Atlanta. The bus will leave at 3:30 p.m., and return after the game. -- May 9: Fleer Major League Baseball Diamond Skills Competition will be held at Sweetwater Park Complex, Thomson, Ga., fields Nos. 5 and 6/ Free to boys and girls 7-14. Basketball

-- June 8-12: 12th annual Gerald White Basketball Camp for boys and girls 8-18 will take place at Augusta's Richmond Academy. Camp is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. NBA players will be guest speakers. More information and a brochure from Augusta Sports in Action Inc., at (706) 792-1811.

-- June 22-26: Ninth annual Marybeth Regan Memorial "Fast Break" Basketball Camp, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Westside High School. For girls only in 6th through 8th grades. Cost is $125 which includes lunch, snack, camp T-shirt and insurance. Proceeds go to the Marybeth Regan Scholarship Fund at Augusta State University. More information: John P. Regan at 860-2369.

-- June 28-July 2: Applications are being accepted for the Ten Star Basketball Camp for boys are girls 6 to 18. The North Carolina camp can be attended as a day camp or overnight. Players accepted by invitation only and each player's coach must fill out an evaluation form. More information: 1 (704) 372-8610.

-- July 13-17: Michael Curry Basketball Camp will be held in Columbia County and at Glenn Hills High School. -- July 20-24: Lady Jags Team Camp for high school varsity, junior varsity or middle school. 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. More information: Coach Keller at 731-7913.

Boxing

-- The Augusta Boxing Club has announced establishment of an annual scholarship fund, with each scholarship to be awarded in memory of Betty Friedman. Members of the Friedman family have supported the boxing club for many years. Applications for present or former Augusta Boxing Club boxers can be picked up at the club, 1929 Walton Way, Augusta. Camps

-- June 15-19: Golf Augusta Pro Shops will hold a junior camp, with two-hour sessions each day. Cost is $100 for the week starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 11 a.m. A cookout with award ceremony will be held on the 19th for juniors and their parents. More information: 863-9905.

-- A series of clinics for juniors and women have been scheduled by Golf Augusta Pro Shops. Cost is $50 per participant for each series of five one-hour clinics. More information: 863-9905.

Car show

-- April 19: "Park in the Park" car and truck show, Harrison-Caver Park, Clearwater, S.C., 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission free to spectators, $15 show participation fee per vehicle. Silent auction, T-shirts for sale and concessions stand. More information: 1 (803) 593-4698.

Golf

-- Tournaments have been scheduled monthly beginning April 24 by the newly formed Golf Augusta Pro Shops Golf Association. More information: 863-9905.

-- April 17: The ninth annual Bob Kirk Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Belle Meade Country Club in Thomson, Ga. Entry fee $50 per player, including lunch at 11 a.m. Registration deadline April 15. Two-man team scramble (best ball). Flights determined by handicap. Shotgun start at 1 p.m., with tee times available for morning play. Awards to top three teams and other amenities. -- April 17: Sixth annual Bionic Invitational at Houndslake Country Club, Aiken. Entry deadline is April 4. Men and women who have had joints replacement surgery are eligible to participate. Last year, 88 participants from 26 states competed. Cost is $75 including golf, awards ceremony and dinner. Proceeds support the charitable mission of Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center. -- May 4-29: The Thomson-McDuffue County Recreation and Leisure Services will hold golf registration for boys and girls 9-18 at the Whiteoak Road office. Registration hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Registration fee is $10. (Additional green fees will be paid at the course during play time). -- May 4: Willard Prior Memorial at Jones Creek Golf Club, Evans. Four-person lauderdale format limited to the first 25 teams to register. Horse shoes

-- April 25: Horse Creek Tournament, open age division, with two players making up a team. Double elimination (best 2 of 3 games). Trophies to top three teams, for most ringers and medals to team that shuts out its opponent. Games consist of 21 points. Field limited to first 12 teams. SportsJam '98

-- J B White and Bi-Lo have joined in helping the Greater Augusta Sports Council in a five-week fundraiser by selling SportsJam '98 T-shirts through April 24. Festivities will end on April 26 at Augusta State University Athletic Complex on Wrightsboro Road with a day-long family sports and fitness festival. Festival will take place from 10 a.m., to 6 p.m., with displays and special shows by Paul Pearman and GT Bikes Airshow performers. More information: (706) 722-8326.

Sports festival

Swimming

-- May 4: The Aiken County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism will hold registration for the Aiken County Swim Team at the recreation center from 8:30 a.m., to 6 p.m. Cost is $40 per swimmer. Tennis

-- April 16-18: Peach Belt Athletic Conference championships, Newman Tennis Center.

Volunteers
