Josey point guard Sherika Wright has been named Miss Basketball for the state of Georgia.
Wright can be seen in the Sunday edition of the Atlanta Journal & Constitution. Berkmar star guard Tony Akins has been selected as Mr. Basketball.
Wright led Josey to its first state title in girls' basketball last Saturday with a 58-47 win over Albany Monroe in the Class AAA state championship game at the Macon Convention Center.
"This is the first time that anyone from this area has ever received this award," Josey girls' coach Lynn Brantley said. "It's a great honor for Sherika (Wright)."
Josey went 28-3 this season and entered the USA TODAY South Regional poll at No. 10 this week. Wright led the Lady Eagles with 19.2 points per game, 6.2 assists and 4.9 steals this season.
She led Josey with 17 points in the Class AAA state championship game and demonstrated her all-around skills all season in leading the Lady Eagles' attack.
Akins, averaged more than 29 points per game this season in leading Berkmar to the Class AAAA state championship game where it lost to Savannah. Akins played on a Georgia Stars AAU team last summer that included South Aiken star center Tony Kitchings and Westside power forward Ndu Egekeze.
