Seeks pledge of respect from police 031398 - The Augusta Chronicle

Facing reality: Police brutality can lead to police killings. ...

The road ahead will not be easy, but a first step would be for all police officers to take a pledge to respect citizens' rights as they go about their difficult job.

Yes, we need law and order but policemen must not beat citizens in their custody, harass black men just because they are black, or abuse their authority. Each new story about police brutality undermines the work of thousands of good police officers and the citizens who want to be able to respect them.

Respect breeds respect, brutality breeds brutality. It is as simple as that. My prayers go out to Alfaigo Davis; also, for police officers and their families.
