Mally's aims to please

Four years ago, Henry Scheer went to New York to buy a bagel oven.

Mr. Scheer, the owner of Mally's Bagels and Grits, looked at several models and naively asked the salesman if the oven could cook anything other than bagels.

"The oven don't know," the salesman said.

Now, after years of serving bagels and grits at his Washington Road location, Mr. Scheer is beefing up the items he makes for his restaurant and catering business. He'll make anything for customers, he said, because "the oven don't know."

The restaurant menu isn't changing, he says, but the catering menu is.

"The bagels worked really good for the restaurant, but we want to get away from the idea that that's all we do," Mally's catering manager Dayle Heath said. "We can do just about everything."

"He does everything from scratch," Ms. Heath said. "He does everything the hard way."

Mally's, 2741 Washington Road, is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The restaurant specializes in breakfast and lunch. Call 736-0770.

Still open

BL's Restaurant -- the buffet-style restaurant owned by state Sen. Charles Walker -- recently closed for lunch but is open for banquets.

The owners plan to remodel, said Charles Walker Jr., the senator's son. The restaurant will reopen sometime in the future, he said.

The restaurant, 1117 Laney-Walker Blvd., once was the furniture store of B.L. Dent, Augusta's first black city councilman and state representative. It was open for four years.
