Sports announcements



NOTE:

Announcements for participatory events must be written, delivered, mailed or faxed to The Augusta Chronicle, P.O. Box 1928, Augusta, Ga. 30903-1928, with a return address and phone number. No phone calls will be accepted. Fax number: (706) 823-3408.

The announcements will be published each Sunday, and must be in the office by the Thursday prior to publication.

Baseball

Feb. 23-March 7:

Augusta Recreation and Parks Department will hold baseball/softball registration from noon to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The program is for boys 5-18 and girls 5-15. Monday-Friday registration sites are Warren Road Community Center, Eisenhower Complex, May Park Community Center and Fleming Activities Center. Saturday registration sites are Warren Road, May Park and Bernie Ward community centers. Registration fee is $25 for Augusta residents and $30 for non-residents. More information: 796-5025.

Registration will be held each Saturday during February for Martinez-Evans Little League, T-Ball, machine pitch, boys baseball and girls fast-pitch softball at Hometown Sports from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. More information: 855-8736.

Feb. 28:

Masters City Little League will hold baseball and softball registration on those days from 9 1.m. to 5 p.m. for boys and girls 5 to 18. More information: Steve Justice, 793-8938, or 592-6284.

Through Feb. 27:

Columbia County Recreation Department will hold youth baseball and softball registration. Sessions are at Patriots Park Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Feb. 16-27. More information: 863-7523.

March 6-8:

The Central Savannah River Area Sports Fans Club will sponsor a trip to the Atlanta Braves' new spring training facility in Orlando. Cost is $185 per person and includes two nights hotel accommodations, motorcoach transportation and two baseball games with reserved seating. Game 1 pits the Braves vs. the Cleveland Indians; game 2 pits the Braves vs. the Florida Marlins. More information: Greg Brooks at (706) 860-8583.

Basketball

March 10:

The Harlem Globetrotters present "What Sports Should Be" at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center at 7:30 p.m. Reserved tickets are $10.50 to $17 are available from the civic center box office and at all TicketMaster locations. A $2 discount is available for youths 12 and under, senior citizens and military personnel (with ID). Discounts for groups of 20 or more also available.

Girls 12 to 15 years old to play AAU/YBOA basketball during the spring and summer. Girls 12-15 also wanted for a 5 on 5 spring league from March through May in South Augusta. More information about both: Phillip Morris, (706) 793-7513.

3 on 3 Basketball League play for ages 8-10 and 11-14 will be held at Graniteville (S.C.) Recreation Center on March 7, 14 and 21. Games start at 2 p.m. Each team will have a maximum five players. March 9-14:

Collins Hill Classic Tournament for boys and girls 10-13. Entry deadline March 1. Entry fee $200 per team. More information: 1 (770) 963-8305.

June 28-July 2:

Applications are being accepted for the Ten Star Basketball Camp for boys are girls 6 to 18. The North Carolina camp can be attended as a day camp or overnight. Players accepted by invitation only and each player's coach must fill out an evaluation form. More information: 1 (704) 372-8610.

Boxing

The Augusta Boxing Club has announced establishment of an annual scholarship fund, with each scholarship to be awarded in memory of Betty Friedman. Members of the Friedman family have supported the boxing club for many years. Applications for present or former Augusta Boxing Club boxers can be picked up at the club, 1929 Walton Way, Augusta. March 13-15:

13th annual Invitational and seventh annual Mr. Perry's Pro-Am, The Club at Jones Creek, Evans, Ga. Pro-am entry fee $75 for pros and amateurs. Invitational entry fee $125 per player. One-day Pro-Am is Friday, March 13, with Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

March 27:

Richmond Academy Athletic Booster Club will play host to a fund-raiser tournament at Forest Hills Golf Club. More information, tournament chairman T Bacon, 738-6981 (home), 823-5617 (work).

March 27:

Second annual Dwight Davis Eisenhower Medical Center Health Services Auxiliary tournament, Gordon Lakes, with 1 p.m. shotgun start. Entry fees $50 per player, $200 per team, includes post-tournament buffet. Four-person scramble. Benefits the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher House. More information: 863-3306.

March 30:

Second annual Aiken County CSRA Classic tournament at Midland Valley Country Club. Four-man captain's choice format. Shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Awards given for top three places. April 22:

April 23-25:

June 25:

Glenn Hills High Mike Stephenson Memorial, Goshen Plantation Country Club. Captain's choice format. Tee time 1 p.m. Entry fees $200 per team, $50 per individual, includes golf and dinner. Road races

March 14:

Rowing

Rugby

Skiing

Feb. 12: The Columbia County Recreation Department will hold an adult softball meeting on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at Patriots Park's main office. Representatives of teams interested in playing during the spring season, which opens March 16, should contact Mike Brodhecker at 763-7523. Team fees: Church and co-ed, $250; men's open, $275. Activity fees: $25 per player in county; $30 per player out of county.

Sports festival

Tennis
