Swaim Jr. takes win at Discount Auto 200

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- His dad was in his head, his car was in the lead and his first victory at Daytona International Speedway was all but secure.

Mike Swaim Jr.'s only concern?

How much gas was in his tank.

Swaim Jr., the defending season points champion in the Goody's Dash Series, drove a post-caution final lap nearly out of fuel, but pulled away for a victory in the Discount Auto Parts 200 on Friday afternoon.

"On paper, we were about a half lap short," said Swaim Jr., who won with an average speed of 112.535 mph and finished 1.405 seconds ahead of Robert Huffman, Doc Brewer, Ricky Bryant and Danny Bagwell.

"I bet we didn't have one lap left -- if that," he said.

Swaim, son of former Dash Series veteran Mike Swaim -- a four-time Dash Series winner at Daytona who coached Swaim by radio -- started Friday from the pole and dominated throughout much of a race that featured six cautions.

Swaim Jr. said the last caution helped clinch the victory.

"Without it, it would have been extremely close," he said.

GRAND NATIONAL:

Dale Earnhardt Jr., 23, will start his first full season on the Busch Series from inside the second row today in the NAPA Auto Parts 300 in a car officially owned by his stepmother, Teresa. But it's clear his seven-time Winston Cup champion father has an active hand in the endeavor.

"He's got a good race car," Dale Earnhardt said Friday. "He's young, and he's got to pay attention, and he's got to do things right. ... As he gets in the race, he's got to run along with some good cars and try to learn as he goes."

A fast car and familiar number aren't the only similarities between father and son. Dale Jr. -- nicknamed "Junebug" by his dad -- has plenty of swagger in his step.

"We have a two-year contract for the Busch circuit, and this is a good way to start out -- on our way to a championship," said Dale Jr. -- nicknamed "Junebug" by his dad -- after qualifying third. "A top-five season-ending finish is a definite reality."

Mike McLaughlin starts from the pole after blistering the field with a qualifying lap of 190.134 mph, easily beating outside pole-sitter and Cup regular Joe Nemechek (188.525).

Young Earnhardt (188.139) lines up alongside Jeff Purvis, a veteran of 110 combined Winston Cup and Busch series starts.
