Wildcats get win over Paine

Tensions were running high Thursday as the Paine College fans tossed verbal darts at the Fort Valley State University Wildcats for demolishing the Lions backboard Wednesday night.

The game was moved to the Augusta State University Athletic Complex while Paine replaces their shattered backboard. Peppi Zellner caught most of the wrath from the Paine faithful because his rim shaker during halftime of the women's game at Carter Gym caused the delay .

Zellner left town with a lifelong memory and the Wildcats (15-11, 10-5 SIAC) escaped with a 70-67 victory. Paine led from the 16:33 mark in the first half until the waning moments of the game. Zellner, 6-foot-7, 260-pounds, scored four of his 14 points in the last 47 seconds to seal the game.

"They (fans) tried to talk trash from the other night but I didn't let that bother me," the freshman forward said. "It's all part of the game."

Paine (14-11, 7-8) had a chance to tie the game with 25 seconds left on the clock. Maurice Wright, back after missing a game with the flu, missed a 10-foot baseline jumper. Marlon Potts snared the offensive rebound but his stick-back attempt was too hard.

Potts was fouled on the play and missed his first free-throw. He purposely missed the second but Zellner grabbed the rebound. Paine coach Ron Spry said Wright and Potts were given the green light to shoot the game-tying shot and was satisfied with Wright's attempt.

"I thought he would make the shot," Spy said. "(Losses) like that come with the turf."

Zellner had 14 rebounds and three blocked shots while Jonathan Nelson led the Wildcats with 17 points. Potts had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Lions. Paine had their four-game winning streak ended with the loss.

A change in venue didn't change the sloppy play in the women's game. Fort Valley (20-5, 11-3) carried a 22-17 halftime lead from Carter gym to the Augusta State athletic complex. The Lady Wildcats instituted a trapping defense with 14 minutes left in the game and pushed their 30-25 lead to 39-27 with 10 minutes remaining.

The Lady Lions (13-11, 7-6) were unable to cash in on 41 Fort Valley turnovers. Instead of making the Lady Wildcats pay for their mistakes, 34 times Paine gave the ball right back. Paine coach Carol Washington didn't blame her team's performance on the 20 hour delay.

"I don't think that had any affect on us," Washington said. "We were rested, we just didn't play. We just rolled over, our players were dead.

"We were unable to capitalize on their turnovers, you have to be able to capitalize."

The Lady Lions finish the regular season at home against Morris Brown on Saturday. A win would keep them at fourth place and they would play Morris Brown again Monday at Paine in a SIAC tournament play-in game.
