The 1998 Cadillac Cup amateur golf season will have a later start, a new site for the oldest tournament and a name and date change for its premier event.
The first event of the eight-tournament series will be the oldest in the series, the 34th annual Gordon Uhl/Golf Capital Invitational on May 16-17. Last year, the Cadillac Cup series started May 2.
For the first time, the Gordon Uhl/Golf Capital Invitational will be played at Midland Valley Country Club in Graniteville, S.C., after a 27-year run at the Goshen Plantation Golf Club. The tournament was held at Green Meadows Country Club for the first six years of its existence.
The Aiken Golf Classic has a new name and a new date. The tournament, annually played at Palmetto Golf Club, is now known as the Palmetto Amateur. The three-day event will be played May 29-31 instead of the usual mid-August date.
One other returning tournament has a date change. The Perry Watson Memorial at the Pine Ridge Country Club in Edgefield, S.C., will be played a week later than normal. This year's dates are Aug. 1-2.
There are eight tournaments in the series, including a new one to the series this year, the Festival of Flowers. This highly regarded event is scheduled June 27-28 at the Greenwood (S.C.) Country Club.
Two of the tournaments this year will be played at the same course. In addition to playing host to the Gordon Uhl/Golf Capital Invitational, Midland Valley also will hold its annual Orville White Cup on Aug. 15-16.
The Cadillac Cup Matches, pitting South Carolina against Georgia, will be held Sept. 12-13. South Carolina golfers lead the series 7-2-1.
