Spartans stave off Westside



The Glenn Hills boys avoided blowing a 15-point lead by holding off a persistent Westside team and winning 63-60 Friday night.

Westside's Lisa Thacker stepped up in the girls game and helped lead the Lady Patriots to a 47-45 win over Glenn Hills.

The Spartans managed the win despite Westside having four players in double figures with Chris Johnson leading the way. .

The Spartans' Jermaine Patterson scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the final quarter, while Mike Cox added 13 points to help lift their team to victory.

At halftime of the boys game, Thomson won a coin toss against Westside and will play host to the Region 3-AAA (B) tournament beginning on Tuesday.

The Westside boys will play Greenbrier, while Glenn Hills awaits the winner on Friday. The Lady Spartans will play Greenbrier on Tuesday while the Lady Patriots take on the winner on Friday.

"I'm disappointed that we lost the toss because a team always wants to have the home court advantage," Lady Patriots coach Bill Richey said.

Glenn Hills, who led 27-21 at halftime, came out a new team in the second half by blowing open the game with a 10-2 run to start the third.

Westside hung in there against a solid Spartan defense despite falling behind by as much as 10 in the third, trailing 43-33 with about three minutes left in the quarter.

With a minute left in the third quarter, Glenn Hills' Jason Wylds stole the ball and fed Tramaine Becton with a beautiful behind-the-back pass for a quick layup. Seconds later, Becton received another pass from Wylds and slammed home a monstrous dunk, bringing the crowd to its feet and the lead to 13 -- 49-34.

Westside's attempt to rally started with 3:28 left in the game after Terry Jackson came alive in the final period, scoring 10 of his 11 points including two three-pointers to help Westside pull within eight, 59-51 with 1:18 remaining.

However, key free throws by Patterson with 25 seconds left iced the game for the Spartans.
