Josey gets OT win vs. Butler

Four great teams equaled two great games at Josey High School on Friday night.

In the girl's game, Class AAA No. 2 Josey edged Class AAAA No. 7 Butler 62-60.

In the boy's game, Tyrone Hayes scored 26 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and hit two game-clinching free throws with six seconds remaining as Josey nipped Butler 62-58 in overtime.

The Lady Eagles of Josey trailed 29-22 at intermission, but rallied in the third period to take a 44-40 lead.

Butler tied the game at 57 on a 3-pointer by Kwameika Brown with 1:59 remaining. But Josey would take the lead for good, 59-57, when Kellie Holland went baseline and scored on a layup.

"I just took her off the dribble," Holland said. "I felt I could take her one-on-one."

Butler had a chance to send the game into overtime but Kwameika Brown and Cheri Evans missed shots that could have tied it.

Josey (18-1) was led by Holland and Sherika Wright with 17 points apiece, but the play of Chandra Griffin and Michelle Drumgold was huge as each player had 10 points apiece.

"Sherika (Wright) and Kellie 1/2 Holland) had great games tonight," Josey coach Lynn Brantley said. "But (sophomore forward) Kenya Thompkins was a little off tonight. The play of Chandra Griffin, Michelle Drumgold and Nichelle Chapman was a big key. They stepped up tonight."

Butler (17-3) was led by Brown, Crystal Davis and Jenine Saunders. The three combined for 53 points and 37 rebounds in the game.

Saunders had 19 points and 15 rebounds, Davis 17 points and 15 rebounds, and Brown added 17 points and seven rebounds.

"I still think we have a better team than Josey, but they won tonight," Butler assistant coach Lisa White said. "We get them to play them again next week (Feb. 7)."

The boy's game featured 11 lead changes and two ties.

Josey (13-4) led 28-24 at intermission and 40-35 after three periods.

Butler (16-4) fought back behind junior guard Richard Wilson, who scored 10 of his team-high 21 points in the fourth period as the two teams went into overtime tied at 51.

Hayes scored his team's first six points in overtime as Josey (13-4) never trailed in the extra session.

Butler had a chance to send the game into a second overtime but turned the ball over with seven seconds left, trailing 60-58.

Hayes hit two free throws to seal it for Josey.
