12 Georgians earn awards for outstanding catches

Danil Ammons of Jesup, Ga., who reeled in a Georgia state record, 58-pound, 7-ounce flathead catfish from the Altamaha River in Wayne County last April 23, heads a list of 12 Georgians who made outstanding catches last year.

The Georgia Wildlife Resources Division awarded each Angler Award certificates commemorating their catches, which met or exceeded minimum weight requirements established by the division.

Fish do not have to set state records to qualify, but must be caught by legal sport fishing methods, weighed on a certified scale before two witnesses, taking the fish to a fisheries biologist for positive identification and completing an application.

Award recipients receive a certificate and a customized baseball cap embroidered with "Georgia Angler of the Year" and weight and species of the fish caught

None one from the Augusta area made the awards list.
