Futurity dates remain fixed

You can mark it down on your calendar -- the Augusta Futurity will be held in late January from now on.

The cutting horse show, which is entering its 19th year, will begin a nine-day run Jan. 23 at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.

For most of its history, the show has been held in late January. In 1994 and 1995, however, it went to an early January date to avoid conflicts with two Texas cutting horse shows. It started on New Year's Day in 1994 and on Jan. 6 in 1995. The Augusta Futurity returned to its late January date in 1996.

Beginning with the 1999 Augusta Futurity, changing dates won't be an option. That's because starting in late 1998, there will be a new tenant at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center -- Augusta's as yet unnamed entry in the East Coast Hockey League.

The former Raleigh IceCaps' season will run from October to March. The team will play road games during the nine days of the 1999 Augusta Futurity.

"Since we're already an established show, the hockey is going to schedule around us," said Augusta Futurity show manager Pete May. "Civic center officials have assured us the hockey won't impact us one bit.

"But we won't be able to do that date jockeying that we have in the past," May said. "We've pretty much established that we're going to go with this date. We're not going to react to other (show) dates."
