Area sports clubs looking for participants



Announcements for participatory events must be written, delivered, mailed or faxed to The Augusta Chronicle, P.O. Box 1928, Augusta, Ga. 30903-1928, with a return address and phone number. No phone calls will be accepted. Fax number: (706) 823-3408.

The announcements will be published each Sunday, and must be in the office by the Thursday prior to publication.

Baseball

City of Aiken is looking for people interested in officiating youth baseball (9-10-year-olds). You must be at least 17 to apply. Also wanted are umpires 18 and older to umpire Dixie Baseball (11-18). A Dixie Baseball umpires meeting will be held at Citizens Park from 6:30 p.m., to 8:45 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 10. More information on Dixie Baseball umpiring: Stephen Gavin, (803) 648-4240. Dixie Youth Baseball/Softball registration for the 1998 season will be held at Roy Warner Park Community Center in Wagener, S.C. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, through Friday, Jan. 23, from 6 p.m., to 8 p.m. It will continue on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration will not be taken after Jan. 24. Jan. 31:

Evans High School Baseball Boosters will hold their annual silent auction from 10 a.m., until 1 p.m., in the school's Commons Area. Food and beverages available. Proceeds benefit school baseball program.

Feb. 21:

March 6-8:

The Central Savannah River Area Sports Fans Club will sponsor a trip to the Atlanta Braves' new spring training facility in Orlando. Cost is $185 per person and includes two nights hotel accommodations, motorcoach transportation and two baseball games with reserved seating. March 9-14:

Registration is open for the 20th annual Bryan Adrian Basketball Camp for boys and girls 5 to 18. Locations include Gainesville, Ga., Rocky Mount, N.C., and Charlotte, N.C. Flag football

Jan. 24:

7 on 7 Valley Clash, Open Age Division, Harrison-Caver Park, Highway 421, Clearwater, S.C. Entry fee $110 per team. Trophies to top three teams and 10 individual trophies for first-place team and 10 medals to second place. Two referees used for each game, which will consist of two 22-minute halves. Feb. 1:

Aiken County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism will sponsor the 7 on 7 Fall Flag Football League for players 17 and over. Entry fee is $250 per team. Trophies to top two teams and 12 individuals for first-place team and 12 T-shirts to second-place team. Trophy for MVP and five medals awarded for first team all-conference (8-team minimum). March 13-15:

13th annual Invitational and seventh annual Mr. Perry's Pro-Am, The Club at Jones Creek, Evans, Ga. Pro-am entry fee $75 for pros and amateurs. Invitational entry fee $125 per player. One-day Pro-Am is Friday, March 13, with Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

March 30:

Second annual Aiken County CSRA Classic tournament at Midland Valley Country Club. Four-man captain's choice format. Shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Awards given for top three places. April 23-25:

Horse shoes

Feb. 21:

Horse Creek Horseshoe Tournament, open age division (two players make up a team), double elimination (best 2 of 3 games). Trophies to top three teams, trophy for most ringers and medals to team that shuts out its opponent. Games consist of 21 points. First 12 teams make up the field. Lacrosse

The Aiken-Augusta Men's and Women's lacrosse teams are looking for athletes with or without experience in the sport for the spring season, which runs from January through May. More information: coach Curt Gary at (706) 733-4271.

Meetings

The Aiken County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and the Aiken County Recreation Commission will hold a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m., at the Aiken County Recreation Center, Highway 1, Graniteville. The meeting is to determine interest in an Aiken County Youth Sports Association. Representatives of youth sports groups such as baseball, football, tennis, soccer and basketball are urged to attend. Road races

March 14:

22nd annual Triple Crown Road Race, a 1998 Palmetto Grand Prix Circuit race, in Aiken. There will be 10-mile and 2-mile road races, 1-mile and half-mile fun runs and a tot trot. More information: D.J. Barnhill, 1 (803) 642-7761.

Rowing

Lessons will be held 8:30 a.m., to 10:30 a.m., the first and third Saturdays of January at The Boathouse, Augusta Rowing Club, Riverfront Augusta Marina. No fee is charged. More information: Jean Daniel at 729-9156.

Rugby

Skiing

The Augusta Ski and Outing Club is looking for new members. The club is the Southern-most in the Crescent Ski Council. Its next meeting is at Winterplace, W. Va., on Feb. 7-8. Soccer

City of Aiken is looking for people interested in officiating youth spring coed soccer (6 to 18). You must be at least 16 to apply. A soccer officials meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., at Citizens Park and new officials will go through certification after the meeting. There is no charge. Jan. 31: The Greater Augusta Soccer Officials Association, in conjunction with the Georgia High School Association, will conduct a clinic on Jan. 31 to certify high school soccer officials for the season. Those interested should contact Myron Opfermann at (706) 863-3374.

Jan. 31: 6V6 Horse Creek Soccer Tourney for men, open age division, Harrison-Caver Park, Highway 421, Clearwater, S.C. Entry fee $175 per team (includes 10 T-shirts). Feb. 12: The Columbia County Recreation Department will hold an adult softball meeting on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at Patriots Park's main office.
