Paine rallies, gets OT win

If you are looking for exciting basketball, go no further than Paine College to get it.

Paine rallied from a 12-point deficit with 7:45 remaining to send the game into overtime and eventually pulled out an 85-83 win over Clark Atlanta on Thursday at Carter Gymnasium.

The Lions had a chance to win the game in regulation but forward Marlon Potts missed two free throws with one second remaining and Clark Atlanta's Jason McNeil rebounded sending the game into overtime.

"I was thinking about all the free throws I was going to have to shoot in practice," said Potts after his misses.

But Paine (8-5) regrouped and Potts gave Paine its first lead, 79-77, in over 20 minutes with a shot in the lane with 3:08 remaining in overtime.

Clark Atlanta (8-6) didn't go away with a fight. With four seconds remaining, Clark's Anthony Smith went to the foul line.

Smith missed the first one and intentionally missed the second one. Georgia Tech-transfer Juan Gaston had his hand on the ball but the ball slipped and Paine had avenged an 85-78 loss to Clark on Dec. 1 in Atlanta.

"I had the ball and it just slipped," said Gaston, who scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the game.

Gaston, a 6-foot-5 forward, is playing football and basketball at the school. He plans to continue to play both sports at this juncture in his career after transferring from Georgia Tech and sitting out the 1996-97 season.

"I tell you what, this league is just as tough as the ACC," Gaston said.

Sha'Drach Qawiy led Paine with 23 points and seven rebounds. Maurice Wright and Potts added 12 points apiece.

Lions coach Ron Spry was real happy to see his team comeback against a quality opponent. Paine was down by seven, 73-66, with 2:45 remaining in regulation and forced the game into regulation.

"You are always concerned about coming back when you are down, " Spry said. "I hope the guys learned tonight about how important it is to make your free throws down the stretch."
