Paine women sweep Clark Atlanta

If Carol Washington can't figure out her own team, what makes you think that Clark Atlanta can?

Melissa Upton scored 24 points and grabbed a career high 23 rebounds as Paine completed a season sweep of Clark Atlanta with an 80-59 win in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at Carter Gymnasium on Thursday.

Paine (7-6, 2-1 in SIAC) won the first encounter between the two teams 89-75 on Dec. 1 in Atlanta. Clark Atlanta (9-3, 2-2 in SIAC) is one of the top teams in the SIAC and has suffered two of its three defeats against Paine.

"I've given up trying to figure this team out," Lady Lions coach Washington said. "Clark is one of the top teams in the conference. I keep telling the girls that this is all psychological. Whenever they make up their mind that they want to play for 40 minutes, they can beat anybody in this conference."

The game was tied at 32-32 at intermission, but Alexsis Glenn (13 points) gave Paine the lead for good 52 seconds into the second half on the front end of a two-shot free throw attempt.

Throughout the second half, Upton dominated the paint. Paine led 52-49 with nine minutes remaining in the game and outscored Clark 28-8 the rest of the way.

Upton scored 12 points in each half and had 14 rebounds in the first half and nine rebounds in the second half.

She was 9-for-18 from the field.

"I just made up my mind that everytime it (a missed shot) came off, I wanted it," Upton said.

The All-SIAC forward said her and her teammates must play the same regardless if its Clark or one of the lower teams in the league.

"If we play like we did tonight, nobody in this conference can beat us," Upton said.

Upton scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the opening half as the two teams went to the dressing room tied at 32-32.

Rotavia Garvie hit a shot at the buzzer at the end of the first half to tie the game for the Lady Lions.

There were seven lead changes and four ties in the opening half.
