A captain with the Richmond County Fire Department was suspended Wednesday after city administrators linked him with a credit card fraud scheme.
Augusta officials are investigating allegations that fire Capt. Ronnie Perdue, who has worked with the department for 19 years, devised a credit card fraud scheme with a local convenience store clerk.
Law enforcement officials and city administrators were tight-lipped about the allegations, saying only that Capt. Perdue was suspended with pay for five days pending an investigation by the city's human resources department.
"I feel bad about this situation. This is a man who has served the community for quite some time. It's an unfortunate situation that will leave a blemish on his record," Fire Chief Ronnie Few said.
Sheriff's Chief Deputy Ronald Strength said he is aware of an investigation but said there were no arrests by Wednesday. He wouldn't discuss the case further.
