Schlotzsky's Deli on Washington Road in Martinez was named 1997 Business of the Year on Wednesday by the Drugs Don't Work program of the Metro Augusta Chamber of Commerce.
The program certifies businesses as drug free, which allows them to get discounts on workers compensation insurance.
Franchise owner Sonny Batra accepted the award on behalf of the Columbia County company.
Schlotzsky's was chosen by the DDW committee because of Mr. Batra's dedication and commitment to promoting a drug-free workplace, said Tammie Flowers, program coordinator.
"Parents have called to ask if their children can work there due to it being a drug-free business," Ms. Flowers said.
Mr. Batra said: "I believe that if every school, every college and every business has this plan, people who can't find a job ... they will have to quit drugs."
Also, the Participant of the Year award was given to outgoing Drugs Don't Work committee chairman Brett McGuire, plant manager of Sweetheart Cup Co. Inc.
Mr. McGuire, who had been chairman since the 2-year-old program began, said that Augusta is in third place in the state for bringing in new Drugs Don't Work businesses. Augusta has 42 businesses in the program now, Ms. Flowers said.
