Sometimes tough choices must be made

Sometimes tough choices must be made when your back is against the wall and no one is willing to help.

One Augusta woman, who lost her job in October, has found little help from social services. She received medical assistance for her two daughters but wasn't eligible for any money for food stamps because she owned a home and a car.

In October, she gave her 12-year-old daughter a puppy. The little girl loved that dog dearly, but the mother had to make the hard decision of selling the dog in order to pay bills.

"I'm out of money and I'm scared to death of my future," the woman wrote in a letter.

Her Christmas may hold heartache without the help of her community. Her daughters have told her not to worry about them, but no mother wants her children to wake up and have nothing on Christmas morning.

The Augusta Chronicle's Empty Stocking Fund can help this family have a happy holiday. The fund has collected hundreds of thousands of dollars and helped numerous families since it began in 1930. The money provides gift certificates for food, clothes and other necessities.

Those needing help this holiday season or those who want to help someone can fill out an application and return it to the News Building, 725 Broad Street. Today is the deadline to return applications.

Forms are available at the security desk in the lobby of the News Building; the Columbia County Bureau in Merchants Village shopping center, 4115 Columbia Road, Martinez; the South Carolina Bureau, 123 Pendleton St., Aiken; and area churches.

The form must include a complete street address - no post office box numbers - with income information, phone number, and ages and Social Security numbers for all household members. Applicants also must explain why they are asking for help.

Those wishing to contribute to the fund may send a donation to The Empty Stocking Fund, P.O. Box 1928, Augusta, GA 30903-1928, or drop it off on the third floor of the News Building. There is no deadline for contributions.
