Just over two weeks ago, mighty USC Spartanburg barely escaped Augusta with a men's soccer victory.
Today, the Augusta State men's team will be trying for a bigger upset as it faces the nationally eighth-ranked Rifles at 2:30 p.m., in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference tournament at Augusta State's field. Second seed Lander, ranked No. 17 in Division II, plays Francis Marion at noon in the other semifinal. The final is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
On Oct. 23, USC Spartanburg scored with 32 seconds remaining to beat Augusta State 3-2. It was one of three matches during the regular season where the Jaguars (14-5) lost on a goal in the last 30 seconds.
Augusta State may have reversed that trend on Wednesday with a 4-3 four-overtime victory over North Florida in the first round of the Peach Belt Tournament.
