After winning the unofficial South Carolina girls tennis Class AAAA state title on Monday, South Aiken will try to make it official today.
South Aiken (15-1) will be going after its second state title in three years when it takes on Wando (15-1) at 1:30 p.m. at Caughman Road Park in Columbia.
The Thoroughbreds defeated Class AAAA defending state champion Irmo 4-1 on Monday in the Upper State semifinals and defeated Spartanburg 4-1 in the Upper State championship match on Wednesday.
"I hope that's the indicator once again," South Aiken coach Elizabeth Sproull said of the win over Irmo.
The highlight match of the day is Thoroughbreds' No. 1 singles player Elizabeth Sauerborn against Wando's Maiko Cook. Cook is the defending Class AAAA/AAA girls' Singles Open state champion.
Wando advanced to the state finals with a 5-2 win over Richland Northeast in the Lower State championship match. Wando, the 1994 Class AAAA state champion, lost to Irmo 5-1 in last year's state title match.
Wando is in the state finals for the fourth time in five years.
