Becker faces Bjorkman in first round of Grand Slam Cup



MUNICH, Germany (AP) - Defending champion Boris Becker will face Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman in the first round of the Grand Slam Cup, tennis' richest tournament, in pairings drawn Monday.

The tournament, which runs Sept. 23-28 in Munich's Olympic Hall and carries a purse of $6 million, also will pit Pete Sampras against Felix Mantilla of Spain in the first round.

Other first-round pairings are: Britain's Greg Rusedski against Australian Todd Woodbridge; Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia against Spain's Sergi Bruguera; France's Cedric Pioline against Filip Dewulf of Belgium; Petr Korda of the Czech Republic against Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten; Marcelo Rios of Chile against Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands; and Austrian Thomas Muster against Australia's Patrick Rafter.

The tournament, whose winner earns $1.6 million, features the 16 players with best records in the year's four Grand Slam events - the Australian, French and U.S. Opens and Wimbledon.
