PETTICOAT JUNCTION - When the offense faltered, the defense took over.
Silver Bluff held Battery Creek to one first down in shutting out the Dolphins 30-0 Friday night.
"That was their goal," said Bulldogs quarterback Patrick Moody. "They wanted to hit hard and keep them from scoring."
The first half was sloppy, with both teams giving up the ball twice.
"It was first-game mistakes," said Silver Bluff coach Al Lown.
Battery Creek's only first down came early in the first quarter. Silver Bluff made 12 first downs for the game and had six in the first half.
Silver Bluff opened the scoring in the second quarter when the Bulldogs took advantage of a Dolphin turnover. Moody punched it in from one yard out.
Moody found the end zone a couple of minutes later after another Battery Creek fumble to make the score 13-0.
"We made a commitment to play defense," said Lown.
The Bulldogs also created havoc on special teams. Silver Bluff tackled the punter on fourth down three times.
Battery Creek threatened only in the first half and that was only on Silver Bluff offense miscues.
With many of Silver Bluff's players playing on offense, defense and special team, cramps began to occur.
"I've seen better and I've seen worse," said Lown. "This is a good barometer on our conditioning."
The Dolphins managed to keep speedy receiver Major Ryans in check during the game. Ryans managed only on catch for eight yards.
"They threw some coverages at us that we didn't anticipate," said Lown. "We ran some players that we normally wouldn't run just to get Major the ball."
The Dolphins contained Ryans, but they couldn't keep the entire Bulldogs' offense pinned down.
Lown simplified the offensive line's blocking schemes and Bulldogs but together a 73 yard drive with knocked six minutes off the clock at the beginning of the second half. Moody found Leroy Walker for a 14 yard touch down pass. The extra point by Grayson Snyder made the score 23-0.
