I love eagles. To me, there is nothing more majestic than an eagle soaring on the wind. Porcelain and ceramic eagles surround me in my office, reminding me to spread my wings and soar to great heights! I believe God wants us to be "Eagle People."
Several verses of Scripture refer to eagles. One somewhat obscure reference is Job 39:27-29 -- "Does the eagle soar at your command, and build his nest on high? He dwells on a cliff, and stays there at night; a rocky crag is his stronghold. From there he seeks out his food; his eyes detect it from afar."
One of the things I have learned in my study of eagles is that they have incredible vision. Humans have 200,000 photoreceptors per square millimeter of retina. Eagles have more than a million. They can see 3-inch-high letters on a billboard a mile away!
WE NEED TO DEVELOP VISION. When Helen Keller was asked, "What would be worse than being born blind?" she replied, "To have sight without vision."
Konrad Adenauer said, "We all live under the same sky, but we don't all have the same horizon."
A bishop was in a heated discussion with someone who had said that men would one day fly. "Nonsense", said the bishop emphatically, "only the angels can fly." This bishop's last name was Wright, and he had two sons, Orville and Wilbur. Father and sons lived under the same sky but had vastly different horizons.
What's your horizon? How clear is your vision? Please allow me to suggest some "looks" we need to take as we develop keener vision.
Look within you -- what is God saying to you?
Look behind you -- what have you learned?
Look around you -- what is happening around you?
Look ahead of you -- what's the big picture?
Look above you -- what does God expect from you?
Look beside you -- what other resources are available to you?
The eagle spends much time in solitude while it looks around and scopes out its prey. May I suggest that we find the time to spend alone with God and ourselves ... and let our vision soar? Then spread your wings and fly, Eagle Person!
