The Masters tournament has made Augusta "the golf capital of the world." But now the Central Savannah River Area is becoming internationally renowned for something else.
Masatoshi Ono, president and chief executive officer of Japan-based Bridgestone/Firestone Inc., explained what that is in announcing why his firm selected Aiken County to build a high-tech, $400 million-plus tire-manufacturing plant, creating 800 new jobs.
"We selected South Carolina and Aiken County," he said, "specifically because of the quality and quantity of the local work force, its transportation infrastructure, proximity to customers, the availability of the appropriate site and the overall attractiveness of the area." (Italics ours).
Every economic development organization throughout the CSRA should publish Ono's remarks somewhere prominently in their business recruitment brochures.
The Masters reminds the world of how great the Augusta-Aiken area is for golf. Let's not let the world forget that we're also a great place in which to locate or to expand a business.
