HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - Hilton Head's first murder in three years was apparently the result of personal relationships gone wrong, authorities said.
Coucil Goode, 45, killed himself with a stolen 9-mm semiautomatic pistol shortly after shooting Lisa Schuemate and Donald Tyson at Hilton Head Gardens apartments Sunday afternoon, authorities said. Ms. Schuemate's wounds were fatal.
The initial shooting happened at about 3:30 p.m. Witnesses saw Mr. Goode approach an idling car in the parking lot of the apartment complex, pull a pistol from his pants and fire several shots at the two occupants of the car.
"We have talked to witnesses, and we have talked to acquaintances," said Detective Sgt. David Randall of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
"It appears in the initial stages of the investigation that Mr. Goode was probably infatuated with Ms. Schuemate, but her feelings toward him were not the same," Sgt. Randall said.
Ms. Schuemate, 34, suffered multiple wounds in the head and neck. She was taken to Hilton Head Medical Center & Clinics then flown by LifeStar to Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, where she was pronounced dead on arrival about 6:15 p.m.
Mr. Tyson, 29, also was hit in the upper body. He was hospitalized in good condition.
Witnesses told investigators that Ms. Schuemate had dated Mr. Goode at one time but that more recently she had been seeing Mr. Tyson.
After the shooting, Mr. Goode reportedly ran to his apartment nearby, where another gunshot was heard by neighbors about 40 minutes after the earlier shootings. When police broke down the door, they found Mr. Goode's body inside.
The pistol used in the shooting was stolen Aug. 1, Sgt. Randall said.
Ms. Schuemate's murder is the first on Hilton Head since May 1994.
