DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - A Towers High School football player collapsed on the field during practice and later died at the DeKalb Medical Center, a county school official said Friday.
Mary Stimmel, a spokeswoman for DeKalb County schools, said Vinson Freeman Jr. was running wind sprints Thursday when he was stricken with a violent seizure and collapsed on the field.
His mother, Vicky Freeman, had come to practice every day to watch her son and was sitting in the nearby stands when it happened, Ms. Stimmel said.
"There's a lot we still don't know," said Ms. Stimmel, adding that the county medical examiner had been asked to determine the cause of death.
She said heat was an unlikely contributor to the player's convulsive attack because the high temperature Thursday was only 71 degrees.
